Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia

A Reason to Hope.  The Means to Cope.

Why We Need Your Help

We need your help in expanding our community-based volunteer network of support for families and individuals affected by schizophrenia throughout Nova Scotia.  By making a donation, you will help fund our highly successful family education and support groups, as well as our peer support programs for those who live with mental illnesses.

Your donation will also help us to continue to provide advice to the many callers to our provincial office, our provision of important connections to mental health and other support services, and our distribution of educational material on schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.  Finally, you will help us to provide an essential public policy voice for those who are, at times, silenced by the effects of their mental illnesses.

Right now we have active chapters or support groups in five communities that represent 65% of the population of Nova Scotia.  Specifically, we want to do three things:

1.   Expand our geographic coverage to the 35% of the population in

Nova Scotia that does not have a chapter or support group in their

      community.

2.   Service our existing chapters with more frequent and innovative

      support.

3.   Deliver programming, throughout Nova Scotia, similar to the From

Recovery to Discovery Mental Health Peer Support Group now meeting

every Thursday evening in downtown Halifax.

This will require money.  We estimate that it will take $60,000 per year for five years to establish well-run chapters throughout the province, but once they are established, they will be critical to our fundraising efforts.

The From Recovery to Discovery Mental Health Peer Support Group is a highly effective and helpful weekly peer support program for those who live with or have experienced any type of mental illness.  It provides practical support and advice, helps individuals build confidence, and provides people with the opportunity to develop skills such as public speaking and group facilitation.  It will take about $3,000 per chapter per year to pay for the room rental and refreshments, as well as covering the travel expenses and stipends for the facilitators.  If we had peer support groups in 10 locations across Nova Scotia, $30,000 per year will be required, but this would be well worth the investment.

Thank you.
